Shaman Drum Going Non-Profit?
Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 12:35PM According to an article in The Michigan Daily, local Ann Arbor bookstore Shaman Drum might become a non-profit organization. It's an interesting idea (although somewhat of a sad one), and I have no idea about the viability of converting a for-profit enterprise to a non-profit. Fellow lit-blog Isak has better commentary than I'd be able to provide, although Anna's main point is the same one I'd make: Shaman Drum is most important to me as a social place where we gather for readings and other events. I buy books there too, but I've been there for more events than I have for shopping trips. Maybe that's exactly the kind of distinction needed for Shaman Drum to become a nonprofit. In any case, good luck to Karl with his decision and with any transition that has to be made. The store's an important part of the local literary landscape, and I hope it continues to be in the coming years.
