Short Story Month 2011: The Plan (or How I Will Post About a Different Literary Magazine Every Day in May)

A few years ago, Dan Wickett decided that May would be Short Story Month, and spent the month posting blog post after blog post about short fiction at the Emerging Writers Network. Over the years, other bloggers have joined in, including Fiction Writers Review and Steven McDermott at Storyglossia, and some years the amount of short story coverage produced during the month has been truly staggering. Two years ago, I managed to write a review of a different story every weekday of May, but this year I'm going to try to do even better, by covering/reviewing one story a day for all thirty-one days, with every story coming from a recent issue of a print literary magazine.

Why only stories in print literary magazines? Mostly because I've gotten behind on that part of my reading. While I've been doing a great job reading books this year (I finished #58 yesterday) and reading online journals (for Best of the Web), I haven't been reading out of print magazines as much, mostly because I've run out of hours in the day. There are plenty of new issues around the house that I've barely even glanced inside, and I know I'm missing out on some of the most exciting work being published this year. And so I've decided to take Short Story Month as an opportunity to get caught up on at least some fraction of that stack.

I'd also like to take the opportunity to discover some new magazines and new writers, and to spread the word about some publications I might not have written about before. Along those lines, here are two places you might be able to help:

Are You the Editor of a Print Magazine?

If you are, and you'd be willing to send me a copy of your publication for possible coverage during the month of May, I'd be glad to give it a look. Send me a quick email at mdbell79@gmail.com, and I'll shoot you my address back as soon as possible (and also let you know if I already have a copy in the house). If you'd prefer to just send me a PDF copy of your magazine, that's fine too, although it might be slightly less likely to get covered, just because it won't be right there in front of me. Thanks so much in advance to anyone who adds to the stack: I'm truly looking forward to reading your magazine. (Should I receive an overwhelming response, so that I can't possibly cover everything that comes in, I'll try to keep covering different magazines as often as possible throughout the summer.)

Are You a Reader? (Of Course You Are)

Have you read something awesome in a print literary magazine recently? Tell me about it! Leave a comment on this thread, and I'll try to cover some of the suggested work as well. There are so many great stories in literary magazines that never get mentioned anywhere else, and it'd be awesome if you'd share what you've been reading. Leave the title, the author, and the magazine and issue number below, and I'll do my best to look at everything I can—I'm sure other folks will too. Thanks in advance for your suggestions: I know most of you that stop by here are great readers, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you've been enjoying. (Let's keep it classy: No suggesting yourself!)

A second way you can help: If you'd like to write a guest post about a story you've loved recently, shoot me an email at mdbell79@gmail.com. (Think 400-800 words or so.) For guest posts, don't feel restricted to print magazines just because I am: I'd love to hear about stories you liked out of collections, out of online magazines, or anywhere else you might have run into fiction, new or old. All I ask is that it overall be positive in tone.

Short Story Month Starts May 1

So that's the plan: One story a day, for thirty-one days. I hope you'll stop back by the blog in just a few days for the first post, and that you'll remember to drop a suggestion below, or to pitch a magazine or a guest post. I know Fiction Writers Review will be covering Short Story Month and that Dan will be posting frequently at the EWN, and I hope you'll consider joining in however you'd like at your own blog, or on Facebook and Twitter. There's a lot of exciting things happening in short fiction today, and while we shouldn't need a month to celebrate them, it doesn't hurt to make a big deal once in a while. Please feel free to join in, and to use the logo above (by Steven Seighman) for any of your own posts. See you May 1!

Awesome, Thank you. I haven't read either of those, so I'll try to get ahold of the issues and check them out. If you'd like to write a guest post on either, I'd be happy to publish it!
