I’m not sure that fiction’s strength is to produce accurate facsimiles of the world, verifiable on the map. Photography and film do a fine job of that. If I get the street names right, and describe all the buildings as they are, I don’t know if there’s any literary pleasure being delivered. It just proves that I know the facts. More interesting to me is the atmosphere of a place, the way landscape and setting are used to put pressure on the doings within.
